Urszula Śliz is a Polish artist whose visual references are rooted in the relationship between unity and otherness — perceptual orders, systems of proportion, colours, rhythm, directions, entities, repetition and difference, analytical dimensions, defined space, content, spiritual depth, the materialisation of light, visible, invisible and hidden laws, cultural contexts, the essence of time, history, and architectural and organic motifs.

Her practice encompasses numerous analyses that stimulate visual reflection and the continuation of her creative work, shaped as an artistic structure for defining existing reality — with roots in both historical and political contexts as well as in universal nature, as described by physics, mathematics and philosophy.

Geometry, as the sublimation of these observations, is for Śliz the perfect essential medium for their expression.

Black Form, 2010

Is there something outside of art — a system, structure, or phenomenon — that quietly shapes how you think about form?

The surrounding world appears to me as a formal structure alive, subjected to constant change and configuration, existing both in its natural form in nature and as one created by humans, sometimes unintentionally, sometimes for a social function. Abstraction in the notation of geometry sublimates these phenomena, becoming their essence, becoming the record of an event or a universal rule describing the world beyond the verbal.

What's the last rule you set for yourself in the work, and did you keep it?

The main principles remain the same — I work in cycles, and the cycles arise naturally from the structure of the changing world around me, just as my own nature changes.

Describe a failure or a dead end in your practice — something that didn't work.

Among my failures, I count the lack of opportunity — for financial reasons — to work on the theoretical part of one of the issues that, in my practice, was meant to draw on Kant's philosophy, and was meant to concern the search for a universal rule governing the structure of the world, based on it and on my own sensibility. Build a new visual construct.
